SETUP


This is how to set up and operate a NetComm Wireless HotSpot to allow customers with wireless devices to access the Internet by buying time on your NetComm Hotspot system.

What you need

To set up your Hotspot, you need the following:

  1. An ordinary Broadband Internet Connection, from any Internet Service Provider
  2. A Broadband modem, such as the NB5Plus4 from NetComm
  3. An HS960 Wireless Gateway (HotSpot) and docket printer

How to set up the Hotspot

Setting up the Hotspot itself is a fairly straightforward process, involving the following steps:

  1. Set up the Broadband Internet account with your chosen ISP
  2. Set up the Broadband modem to connect to the Internet, following the instructions provided by the manufacturer and the chosen ISP. This is made much easier if you choose a NetComm ADSL Modem such as the NB5plus4 which are optimised for Australian ISPs and come with step-by-step Installation and Configuration videos.

    If you are sharing your
    phone line with a telephone
    you will also need a splitter/filter
    so that you can use the line
    for phone calls and ADSL.


  3. Connect the HS960 Hotspot to the Broadband modem.


  4. Configure the HS960 using the simple web-browser interface.

    The main settings that you need to complete are:

    1. Time and billing settings

    • If your billing is accumulated or time out method
    • Whether you would like cash or credit card payments (or both) SMTP mail details for passthrough of email and IP addressing details.
    • If you are accepting cash or credit card payments online (or both)



    2. Email Settings

    Add your smtp email address from your ISP.


    3. Log in Details

    Change your log in and password from admin/admin to something else for security.

OPERATION

Setting up customers to access to the Internet

To set up customers to use the Internet via the Hotspots, the following simple steps have to be followed:

  1. Customer requests access to the Hotspot and pays the fee.
  2. Staff member prints username and password at the touch of a button on the printer connected to the HS960 and hands it to the customer.


  3. Customer powers on laptop or PDA which connects to HS960 wireless network








  4. Customer attempts to connect to a webpage using their web browser
  5. Hotspot login page appears and asks user for the username and password printed on the slip.
  6. Customer enters username and password into the form in their web browser
  7. Customer is connected to the Internet via the Hotspot.

    On connection they will be presented with a username and password request screen in their web browser. They enter the username and password found on their docket and they are connected.

    NetComm's Hotspots take advantage of IP Plug and Play technology, which instantly recognises a new user and all TCP/IP configurations. User IP addresses are setup automatically, which means your customers do not need to adjust the settings or

    alter the configuration of their wireless Notebook or handheld PDA. When the users time expires the NetComm Hotspot

    will disconnect their computer from the internet and they either need to finish or purchase more time.

    HOTSPOT RANGE EXTENSION

    The NetComm wireless Hotspots is an 802.11g (54mbps) wireless device. It can extended like any normal wireless network. NetComm sell an external access point/repeater/bridge which we recommend for extending the wireless signal.

    The NP730 can be wall or ceiling mounted. In access point mode you would connect the NP730 to one of the ports on the back of the Hotspot.

    In repeater mode you can have your second unit and any other additional units (in line of sight from first NP730 plugged into the power in repeater mode to carry the signal on.
