What is SHDSL?
SHDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line.
There are two components to note here:
DSL refers to a digital signal carried over your ordinary telephone line;
S, for Symmetrical, means that the digital signal travels at the same speed in both upload and download.
How does SHDSL work?
DSL increases the digital capacity of ordinary telephone lines (the local loops) into the home or office by several orders of magnitude, depending on distance between the customer and the telco central office.
DSL allows high-speed broadband Internet to be deployed with minimal installation and without the need for new cabling.
Is SHDSL right for me?
Most SHDSL users will be Small to Medium Enterprises or Corporate users.
Because SHDSL allows for fast upload and download speeds, it is typically deployed for:
- IP Telephony (for example, Voice over IP or VoIP)
- Web and Email server hosting
- Video Conferencing
- large data file transfers
- corporate LAN to LAN connections such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
