To connect to the internet, all you need is a phone line, a modem or router to connect to the phone line and an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
While dial-up is still commonly used to connect to the internet, broadband is now the most popular type of internet connection as it allows you to continue to make or receive calls while using the internet and it is up to 10 times faster than dial-up. The introduction of 3G mobile broadband has also made high speed internet more accessible.
Broadband is typically available as an ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+ connection. Irrespective of the type of ADSL connection you have, it is wise to choose a modem router now that is ADSL2+ compatible. Other factors to consider with a router are whether you want to operate wirelessly and how many ports you are likely to need to connect other devices.
