To connect to the internet, all you need is a phone line, a modem or router to connect to the phone line and an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
While dial-up is still commonly used to connect to the internet, broadband is now the most popular type of internet connection – as it allows you to continue to make or receive calls while using the internet and it is up to 10 times faster than dial-up. The introduction of 3G mobile broadband has also made high speed internet more accessible.
Broadband is typically available as an ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+ connection. Irrespective of the type of ADSL connection you have, it is wise to choose a modem router now that is ADSL2+ compatible. Other factors to consider with a router are whether you want to operate wirelessly and how many ports you are likely to need to connect other devices. (You will also need a microfilter to prevent other devices interfering with the connection).
